Tuesday (Becher-Kluesner-Downtown). Finding Hoosier oil requires luck, study, money, work By MARK R. CHELLGREN Associated Press Writer In 1982, there were 1,171 wells drilled in search of oil in Indiana. Of them, 555 were dry holes, 511 struck oil. Those figures say something about the oil business.

Finding oil in Indiana is a combination of scientific study, money, work and more than a little luck. "The biggest problem is finding reserves," said Lester Moore, a past president of the Independent Producers Association. "Indiana has been pretty well picked over." 3-car crash results in minor injuries A three-car accident at Green River Road and Surrey Drive resulted in only minor injuries Sunday but left one car totaled and two others heavily damaged, according to Vanderburgh County sheriff's deputies. Police said Dorothy Chappel, 3806 Terra Trace, was driving north on Green River Road and started to turn left on to Surrey Drive when her car collided almost headon with a southbound car driven by Heidi Erickson, 6300 Newburgh Road. The force of that collision knocked the two cars back into a third vehicle driven by David G.

Purcell, 2356 Boeke Road, who was trying to go around the car driven by Ms. Chappel. Purcell, who was pulling a trailer carring Honda Odyssey and a motorcyle, was forced off the road. There were no injuries in the Purcell car. Ms.

Chappel suffered a bruised face and neck, while Ms. Erickson received a broken nose and other minor injuries, according to police. The Erickson car was a total loss, police said. Ms. Chappel was cited for driving left of the center line.

Two persons sought in Otwell burglary Special to The Courier OTWELL, Ind. Police are looking for two persons who took $300 from the IGA grocery in Otwell about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Pike County Sheriff's deputies said the two ke apparently entered the building through a window to the storage room on the second story. Police were called when neighbors suspected vandalism.

Who had green light still issue in wreck Police were still working Sunday to determine which driver had the green light in the accident which killed a 25-year-old Evansville woman Saturday. Julie Beard of 1010 N. Willow was the passenger in a car driven by her husband, Ricky, 32, which collided with another car at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Riverside Drive shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday Patricia Ingle, 37, of 2016 Maryland told police she had the green light as she was turning west onto Riverside.

Beard told police he saw a green light a block before the intersection as he was southbound on U.S. 41. A witness, westbound on Riverside, was stopped for a red light at U.S. 41 and waiting for the light to change. Police Sgt.

Joe Reed asks anyone who witnessed the accident to call the detective office at 426-5515. Mrs. Beard was taken to Welborn Hospital where she died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Beard, Mrs.

The big oil companies don't bother with the Hoosier state because there just isn't much oil here. Since the state started records and through last year, 477,342,724 barrels of oil have been pumped out of Indiana ground. A barrel, the standard unit of measure in the business, contains 42 gallons. In 1982, production was 5,562,696 barrels. That may sound like a lot of oil.

And at the current prevailing price of $29 per barrel, it adds up to nice chunk of money. But like the crap shoot involved in the drilling for oil, the rest of the business is also full of uncertainty. Even if the drill finds oil, there is no guarantee how much will come out of the ground. The Glendale North field in Daviess County, for example, was discovin 1942. Snce then, it has produced 1,573 barrels.

Last year, it did not produce a drop. There are success stories, though. The Griffin Consolidated field that lies beneath Posey and Gibson counties has produced more than 77 million barrels since its discovery in 1938. Last year, the production was still a respectable 403,694 barrels. Once oil is found, there is no guarantee that it will keep producing.

At that time, producers can start secondary recovery methods. The most common involves flooding geologic formation with water to force the oil out. Steam also can be pumped into the ground to liquify the oil stuck in the primarily sandstone formations. Finding and producing oil is expensive. Mineral leases must be purchased and elaborate geologic and seismic data must be gathered.

Often, that expensive information just leads the driller to another dry hole. Most promising formations in Indiana are relatively shallow, from 2,500 to 3,500 feet, though the deepest producing well in the state is 4,508 feet into the ground. Still, the cost of drilling and completing a well is $120,000, Moore estimates. Once oil is found, there are the costs of the pump, storage tanks and transportation. And oil in Indiana never just gushes out of the well.

In the vast majority of the wells, the oil comes out along with water lots of water. It is not uncommon to get 20 barrels of water for each barrel of oil. "Water in our area is the biggest problem," said Richard W. Beeson, who is the largest oil producer in the three area including Indiana, southern Illinois and western Kentucky. That water must be disposed of, and often another expensive well must be drilled so that the water can be pumped back into the ground.

Thus, $29 isn't much when production costs account for $22. Still, the current price "is sufficient that you'll look for oil," Moore said. "At $38 you're going to look more, but we can live with $29." Just after the Arab oil embargo, the price for a barrel of crude did jump to $38. At that time, "everybody was getting into the oil business, whether they knew anything about it or not," Beeson said. Some business tactics used by those newcomers left a bad image that established producers are still trying to shake.

But many of those people are gone. "A lot of companies went belly up when the price dropped," Beeson said. Moore said oil production in Indiana is never likely to reach Texas' proportions. "Our best possibility for finding new oil is just additional drilling," Moore said. "We are finding oil in areas that were sparsely drilled before," Beeson added.

"Some of the reservoirs were passed up because we didn't have the technology." Beeson, who began working in the oil business as a youngster and says his dream was to drill an oil well, is not one of those people who say all the oil has been found and is running out. "They said we were out of oil 30 years ago," he said. "Twenty years ago, they said the same thing. Five years ago, they said there was place else to look. Since then, I've found a million barrels of oil.

I'm optimistic." 'Doctor W' sets goal: Break sound barrier By LINDA NEGRO Courier staff writer ELDORADO, Ill. He won't make it into the Guinness Book of Records but Eldorado's "Doctor W' plans to spend more than 373 hours in front of the microphone. The 40-year-old disc jockey for WKSIFM has been wanting to break the time-onthe-air record for years, and finally got his chance at 8:30 a.m. June 20 to promote the station which offers adult contemporary music on 102-FM to communities from Paducah, Mount Vernon, and into Indiana. "It's just takes mind power.

This is only the first week, I'm just getting said Larry Walton, alias as he approached his 160th hour late Sunday. "The first 150 hours are the toughest. I want to give people hope that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to." Walton said he prepared himself for the ordeal with a 90-minute session with hypnotist Don Benitone of Herrin. "He prepared me by teaching me how to relax and get the best sleep possible in the time I have," he said. Walton said the last record for a disc jockey was 373 hours and 35 minutes set by a disc jockey in Cottonwood, Arizona.

He said the 1983 Guinness Book of Records lists that record but claims it will consider no other entries for the category. "They feel it is too dangerous because the last guy to set the record had all kinds of physical and mental problems," Walton said. But it isn't the Guinness Book of Records, Walton's after it's the record. Rules allow him a five-minute break every hour which can be accumulated to two hours a day. So Walton leaves the station at 6 a.m.

and walks 20 feet to a travel trailer, provided by the community. "I shower and then lie down and in 15 seconds I'm asleep," he said. "And it just takes a whisper to wake me up at 8 a.m." Walton, who has worked at the station since March, said the community support has been overwhelming. "They bring me food and clothing, anything I need," he said. "I developed a closeness with the audience.

They're proud of me. It's banded everyone together." Walton said the experience has already changed his life because he has learned to reject the negative thoughts and concentrate on the positive. "I'm more cheerful now than I've ever been," he said. "I'm going 22 hours a day and I feel like I could go forever." Bad pumps leave town dry Special to The Courier BELLMONT, Ill. A broken pump and a water shortage mean boiling water for the residents of the Wabash County community of Bellmont.

One of the town's two water pumps broke over the weekend and the city had to turn to neighboring fire departments which hauled in more than 25,700 gallons of water Saturday. Fire departments in Mount Carmel, Keensburg, Allendale, West Salem and Vincennes, pumped the water into the water tower, according to Jim Palmer of the Mount Carmel Fire Department. That water and the remaining pump will help the community limp along until the Wilson Drilling Co. of Fairfield, Ill, repairs the pump, according to Mayor Larry Sloss. Meanwhile residents are asked to boil water, and refrain from watering lawns and washing cars.

"It just happened to go out in the hottest weather," Sloss said. said the drilling company has its equipment set up and will work today to pull the pump from the well. "We hope to have it back in operation tonight," Sloss said. He said the problem wasn't new to the community which had problems with the second pump last summer.
